Biography of Michael Anthony Pratt Sr.
Mike Pratt Sr. was born the middle child of 3. His older brother, Louis and young sister Anna.
Mike's Grandparents on his father's side were Oklahoma homesteaders. Grandfather Pratt was born in
Indiana before the turn of the century and moved to Oklahoma as a railroad telegraph operator.
Mike Pratt's maternal Grandparents were immigrants from Italy. Mike's Grandfather on his Mother's
side was a Taylor for 42 years until he death.
He was very close to his Grandparents, they lived directly across the street and because both of
his parents worked full time his Grandparents were always there for him. His Grandparents we very
generous with their love and he was reared in a very kind and loving atmosphere. Every Sunday after
church was a big event with many friends, relatives and family visiting for dinner.
Mike's father was a CPA for a major US Corp. Although His family was raised Roman Catholic Mike's
mother was an Executive Secretary for a large Synagogue. Through this association the Mike's family
learned many of the traditions and holidays of the Jewish faith. This knowledge gave Mike a broad
background and understanding of others. Mike became a very compassionate and caring person with
great love for all people and a desire to do something in this world to help others.
When Mike was 10 years old his father suffered a near-fatal heart attack. It was a total disaster for the
family. His father was hospitalized for over a year and his mother was working three jobs just to take
care of the family and save their home. However, because of the work, the worry and extreme pressure,
his mother had a nervous breakdown and they lost everything. It was a whole different life now. Mike's
older brother worked at a local grocery store to help support his family and put himself though college.
His bother Louis joined the US Army and while serving his county during the Vietnam War sent every
spare penny home to help his family.
Mike was 13 years old when the World Herald News Paper Feature him their
" Headliner in the Making " as " Lad is on Trail Marked Success "
At the very young age of 16 years old, Mike quit school and married Rita Agosta. Mike stated a career
in sales. His wife finished high school while Mike struggled to learn the art of selling. Their fist apt cost
$55.00 per month which included utilities.
Mike's started selling " Hope Chest Items " ( Cookware, Fine China Dinnerware and Crystal )
door-to-door to single working girls living in apartments. Mike stayed with his first position for 5 years.
He noticed young girls were trending away from putting away items for their " Hope Chest " and living
more for today. Mike took notice that girls fiancee's and boy friends were sending sophisticated Hi-Fi
Stereo Equipment back home from Vietnam War.
After this keen observation introduced and developed a unique method of marking stereo equipment
door-to-door. National sales reached $5 million dollars in 1970. At only 18 years old, Mike was the
youngest Officer Manager in the company and won Nation Sales Champion of Cordon Blue Cookware
Company. In 1971, at the young age of 20 years old, Mike was hired by a nation cookware Corp. as
National Sales Director, and the youngest distributor in the history of that Corporation.
During this first five years of marriage Rita stayed home and helped raised their first son Mike Pratt Jr.
while Mike Pratt Sr. continued to travel coast to coast developing his selling skills and public relations talent.
At this time the Vietnam War was in full swing. Mike noticed that the culture of young people was
drastically changing and single working girls were drifting away from the " Hope Chest " tradition.
More and more single working girls were having their boy friends or fiancee send them sophisticated
Stereo and Hi-Fi equipment from Thailand.
In 1973 Mike formed his own company called " Sound of America " and sold stereo equipment
door-to-door.That year Mike was hired, by for 3 different National Cookware Companies, to teach their
sales people as to how to sell stereos . It was during this time Mike's wife Rita made him the proud father
of their second son, Jason Tye Pratt. Who was to be forever called " Tye " Pratt.
While working in Denver, CO. Mike bought a set of Fire Alarms for the safety of his family. This timely
purchase started him thinking... what a fantastic opportunity it would be to sell a product save lives.
Mike started researching the Fire Protection Industry and he created a lot of commotion among the
major industry leaders. MasterGuard Corp. a Division of SMC Industries ( Salad Master Company )
contacted Mike and contracted with him to develop his own direct sales organization in 9 midwestern
states. At 25 years old Mike was the youngest Regional Marketing Director in the history of a 25 years
old major Corp. In 1974 Mike's Region ( MasterGuard of the Midwest ) ranked 3rd internationally and
his personal Dealership was 2nd only to the Corporation's Home Office Dealership. The following year
Mike recruited, trained and motivated his sales safety advisors and new dealers. Four of his dealers were
in the top ten nationally and one was the first woman dealer and " Rookie of the Year ". In the following
years, working towards his goals, Mike was able to motivate his sales " Safety Advisors " to a level
where nine of them were in the top twenty in the nation and thirteen of his dealers were in the top twenty
nationally. An important note is that three earned over $100,000.00 in 1976.
Since most of his personnel were local in rural areas, across nine states, Mike earned a Private Pilots
Licence. He next bought a four passenger, high performance Rockwell Commander aircraft.
Over the next couple of years, Mike and his three top producers worked days and late into the
evening then flying to there next location. During this time Mike racked up over one thousand hours
of night time flying and that a lot of miles at 160 miles per hour!
Because Mike & Rita's business ventures generated very high earnings, it was necessary to
incorporate. Thus, Mike Pratt & Sons Corporation was formed in June of 1977.
"Mike Pratt & Sons Corp ". purchased their own office complex, Pratt Plaza on July 1, 1978.
During the next few years Mike personally recruited, trained and motivated over fourteen
thousand people. Since marketing was done almost exclusively though direct in home sales,
Mike knew, self motivation, goal setting and selling skills, were vital to success so he developed
a public speaking talent. It was through this new talent Mike introduced a new way of marketing
through the " Restaurant Dinner Program "instead of the old " in home sales " method. Sales
skyrocketed and soon the national headquarters commissioned Mike to train all Regional
Marketing Director Nationwide and ever internationally. The next year sales increased over 300%.
Mike always had a love for pioneering: he waded into the fire protection field only a few realized it
importance. Mike knew it was of great benefit to everyone and set out on a crusade as evidenced by his
monthly news letter " The Crusader " and the " Pratt Success Express ". He lavishly awarded his Safety
Advisors with numerous accolades the first was a badge stating " I Save Lives for Living ". Mike played
a major role in changing the attitude of tens of thousand from indifference to the threat of fire to the
acceptance of the need for fire protection to everyone.
After eight years in the fire protection industry, millions of dollars worth of equipment installed in homes
and most important numerous testimony letters and newspaper articles of lives that were saved. Mike
started moving in a different direction. He developed his motivational speaking / platform speaking ability
to a level that now he was contracted to speak for sales organization of all types. He was so successful in
this endeavor. Mike founded " Pratt Performance " which consisted of group seminars for
sales / marketing training and motivational speaking. In 1978, at the national convention Mike delivered
his most famous speech " Give Me the Ball " and finished with " farewell, I wish you all Greatness! ".
Although Mike enjoyed platform speaking it was bittersweet to him. He liked knowing he was helping
others with his knowledge, training and encouragement but what he didn't like was as he said " all I do is
plant the seed but never get to actually see the garden grow ". Mike began searching for a new vehicle
to help other reach their dreams through marketing of a unique product.
Shortly after the brake up of the AT&T Bell system Mike was hire as Midwest Regional Director of
Marketing for "Telenational Long Distance Inc. " Phone Service. Mike developed a method of direct marking
to businesses for long distance service. Within his first year he increased sale and revenue over 500% !
Early in 1982, Pratt Productions was formed, and the idea of making " The Paper Television " was
conceived. The product was a photograph business card Trade Marked " The Pratt PhotoCard ".
This time Mike decided to market through Franchising. The PhotoCard business grew rapidly and
became a very profitable enterprise. Mike was approached by a buyer who wanted the whole business
and made an offer Mike & Rita decided to accept.
The sale of PhotoCard was a major event in their lives and through wise investments and savings they
were in a position to retire and enjoy the fruits of their labor. Now in there early 30's and grandparents
by the oldest son, Mike Pratt Jr., Mike, Rita and their youngest son Tye enjoyed their life at their
Mike Pratt Sr. has always taken great pride in his own success but most important to him are the
people he helped to achieve their goals and dreams. This can best be stated in the words of his peers.
In 1986, at his 20th year sales reunion his peers summed it all up in these words " To know Mike Pratt
is to know a man proud of his accomplishments, and through a God given talent, he would somehow look
into the depths of your soul and convince you that you achieve any goal you set.
Lovingly written by Mike's Mother ( presented on his 40th birthday )
After retiring Mike did training seminars and speaking engagements for Corporations such as
Beeline Motor Freight Inc., Willsie Cap & Gown and State Farm Insurance just to name a few
